“A businessman tries to pass Occupy Wall Street protesters blocking access to the New York Stock Exchange area Thursday.” (via CNN)
How noble, preventing that man from getting to work. He’s clearly the devil. Can’t you tell by his suit?
I wonder if Charlie Rangel had any difficulty getting to work today.
Imagine, pictured above: Abortion protestors prevent a doctor from entering the Planned Parenthood office where he works. I get that they aren’t throwing bombs. But is it still nonviolent in our minds?
Physically using your body to contain or restrict the movement of someone is violence, if you ask me. When a husband stands in front of a door and refuses to let his wife leave, that’s violence. When a crowd uses its collective, brute force to block a man’s path, that’s violence too. Unless you’re Bart Simpson, and you think it’s okay to say: “I’m going to be swinging my arms like this, and if any part of you should happen to get in the way, that’s YOUR problem!”
They are physically using their bodies to prevent people from going somewhere. They are being violent and committing a crime and violating other people’s civil rights.
Jeff Miller is adorable.
Actually he’s not too far from making a decent argument but it would also completely undermine his ideological beliefs so I can understand why he stops there or is selective about it.
I don’t know how I feel about this. On the one hand, the point is to shut down the system, and try to replace it with a better one. Or so they say it is. Whatever, not gonna debate that right now, but that seems to be the point. So stopping the businesses on Wall Street from functioning might play into that.
But if we’ve learned nothing from the history of this damn nation, it’s that it isn’t okay to create and allow civil liberties for a group by taking them away from another. Just like OWS keeps saying corporations aren’t people? That’s not a corporation that’s being barricaded. That’s a person. Maybe has a family, too. There’s no reason to assume that he doesn’t take off that suit at the end of the day and join in the fight, just like there’s no reason to assume that he does. But he’s a person, who doesn’t have to explain why he’d rather go to work than link arms in the street.
They could have let him to go to work, without all the drama.
Not going to lie - I may have reacted quite violently to this situation - or try to find a way to get around. Biggest issue with OWS is that they are impacting people, middle class people - who have nothing to do with the corporation. OWS by doing thins like this only serve to push more people down.
I garuntee you this guy’s boss will not give a shit about any excuse if he misses a high powered meeting, and fire his ass. Just like his 6 - figure supervisor is probably avoiding this line all together.
OWS fuck off.
